I heard him play these sonatas, thirty-six years ago at the Royal Northern College of Music and, unfortunately, my opinion hasn’t changed. It’s like strait-jacketed Schubert. A little like his disciples play.

I’m sorry, but I’m bored. I think these pieces have a greater range than the confines of this very ‘proper’ performance. The tonal range and imagination is confined within very strict musical protocols. I think it lives and breathes a little more freely.

An amazing recital. The Maestro's subtle control of dynamics and apparent ease of execution is a marvel to behold given his then venerable age. The Schubert impromptu is profoundly moving, and also his Kinderszenen is vividly expressed through its gentle story telling.

Berman was a great artist. He had a unique touch like no other. No one could equal him at what he did best. His Schumann 1st sonata interpretation fascinates me. There are many beautiful moments, but it doesn't seem to gallop the same one other interpreters make it. To me, his Schumann doesn't convince. His touch doesn't seem to fit Schumann as well as Liszt and Zach. What do you all think about his Schumann?

I like Rubinstein but the Chopin is very sloppy

Crazy impressive as piano-playing, but just insanely fast all over the place. Works in a lot of the Prokofiev, but the Chopin? Not so much.

Die Russen sind hervorragende Musiker, nicht nur als Komponisten, auch als Interpreten. Hörbar gerade bei solch anspruchsvollen und schwierigen Komponisten wie Robert Schumann.

Ugh, ponderous, little dynamics, boorish articulation, technically subpar - this was already dated 30 years ago. Richter never got Mozart.
